What is psychotherapy?

Depression is relatively common among American adults, with 14.8 million people — 6.7 percent of the adult population — experiencing a major depressive disorder in any given year. People who are depressed experience sadness or loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. While just about everyone experiences these feelings every once in a while, people who are depressed have these feelings on an ongoing basis, and the symptoms of depression affect how they function in daily life.

Anxiety helps us get out of harm’s way and prepare for important events, and it warns us when we need to take action.But you may experience anxiety that is persistent, seemingly uncontrollable, and overwhelming. If it’s an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it can be disabling. When anxiety interferes with daily activities, you may have an anxiety disorder.

Every person is unique and has different preferences and needs. Our cultural values, beliefs and different ways of dealing with situations, usually come from the combinations of racial, ethnical, professional, and personal backgrounds. A therapy can be most effective when a therapist understands the client's individual needs and is able to tailor the process of counselling accordingly.

Life transitions can be predictable such as a child leaving for college or marriage, or they can be unpredictable, such as the sudden death of a loved one or a traumatic accident. Whatever the degree or intensity of the event, every transition we experience forces us to make changes to our existing life. A major life transition literally closes one chapter of our life, and starts a new one, putting us in a new place and direction that we have not walked before. It is often a very difficult adjustment as we endure intense feelings of fear, doubt, and uncertainty.

Addictions hurt everyone involved and are devastating to the lives of the addict and loved ones. The person addicted may feel completely helpless, and with each repeated act, his or her self-worth falls lower and lower. Addicts lose touch with reality and their relationships in life crumble. They often suffer from multiple other life traumas and unresolved problems that bury themselves behind an outward expression of compulsion.
